Plant-derived natural products as leads to anti-cancer drugs

Article Type: Review There are many difficulties and deficiencies in chemotherapeutic drugs especially drug resistances that appear in cancer chemotherapy. In spite of the fact that chemotherapeutic drugs are very effective, severe side effects limit the use of these drugs. People have to pay more attention to natural sources of cancer drugs to increase the anti-cancer agents present in the drugs. Historically, natural products have been the source of the active ingredients of therapeutic agents, especially in the areas of infectious diseases and tumor therapy. Natural products play an irreplaceable role in the discovery of new drugs and new drug-lead compounds; it is an important source of novel structure and unique role in antitumor compounds. Currently, more than half of the widely used anti-cancer drugs in the world are derived from natural sources. Many active natural products and their derivatives with high activities and low side effects can be obtained by structure modification and transformation. Especially in the field of anti-tumor and anti-AIDS drugs, the researches and development of new drugs from natural products show a booming vitality and an attractive prospect.
